COMMUNALISM
“Communalism” is defined as :”A
strong sense of loyalty to the interests of one particular group, religious or
ethnic, rather than to society as a whole.
It can also be called : sectarianism
or separatism or chauvinism.
The simplest antonym of communalism
is “socialism” or “collectivism” or “secularism.”
What follows is not an essay on
communalism. It is just a short speech delivered by a character in a play
titled The Merchant of Venice, Act 3,
Scene 1, written by the English
poet-playwright William Shakespeare (1564-1616).
The name of the character is Shylock
who is a Jew whose community was then
hated by the Christians.
In the play his rival is Antonio, a
Christian, who had taken loan from him but could not repay on the fixed date
mentioned in the loan agreement. The
violation of the agreed date promised a pound of flesh from the borrower’s
body.
Shylock is asked not to insist on
this condition which is revengeful against Christians. But he is unwilling and
delivers the following short protestation.
“If it will feed nothing else, it
will feed my revenge. He hath disgraced me, and hindered me half a million,
laughed at my losses, mocked at my gains, cooled my friends, heated mine enemies;
and what’s his reason?
“I am a Jew.
“Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew
hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? Fed with the same
food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the
same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a Christian is?
“If you prick us, do we not bleed?
If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die?
“If we are like you in the rest, we
will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility?
Revenge. If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by Christian
example? Why, revenge.
“The villainy
you teach me I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the
instruction.
