UNIVERSAL
LOVE
To love is to be fond of, to feel affection for, to be attracted
to, to hold dear, to adore, to desire, to lust for, to yearn for, to like, to
have a soft spot for, to relish, to enjoy, to appreciate, to show sympathy,
warmth, friendliness, appreciation, brotherhood, kindness, intimacy, devotion
and charity.
Its field is not
limited that of the saying: Love thy
neighbour as thyself; even if it means “all men are brothers” and “no countries
are strange; no men are foreign.”
Universal love, according to great thinkers, signifies unconditional
fondness for all of existence. It transcends boundaries and is directed towards
everything and everyone. Conceptually, it emphasizes compassion, unity and the interconnectedness
of all beings.
To put it summarily, universal love is unconditional and
limitless; implies compassion and understanding; expresses harmony and unity; manifests
practicality, not just hypothesis; has affection for all beings; lacks ill
will; exhibits attachment for others without shedding love for one’s own self.
Morally, religiously and spiritually , universal love is the
comprehensive term for all types of human and non-human fondness.
To conclude, here is a condensed view by the
American abolitionist Mrs. Lydia M. Child (1802-80). She says: “ The cure for
all the ills and wrongs , the cares, the sorrows, and the crimes of humanity,
all lie in that one word “love.” It is the divine vitality that everywhere produces and restores life. To each
and every one of us, it gives the power of working miracles if we will.
