IT
IS A DANGEROUS WORLD
“Danger”
is defined as the possibility of something happening that will injure, harm or
kill somebody, or damage or destroy something.
“Dangerous”
means risky, perilous, hazardous, precarious, insecure, unsafe, defenceless,
treacherous, etc.
Non-dangerous
places, sites, situations, events, activities, occupations, adventures,
journeys, travels, efforts, discoveries, and inventions are rare.
Natural
places like rivers, canals, hills, valleys, mountains, jungles and deserts are
also dangerous.
Houses
collapse when they are old or are hit by floods and earthquakes.
Diseases
of all the physical organs and those of the mind and the brain are also
dangerous. Emotional imbalance, anxiety, insomnia and depression, too, pose an
unavoidable danger to life.
Medicines
which are intended to cure the patients also make them sick. They have even
fatal side effects.
Weapons
are invented for safety but they cause horrible destruction and loss of lives.
Food
is safe within limits and according to one’s constitution, but overeating is dangerous and destroys good health.
The
question why has God made the world a dangerous place with harmful insects like
mosquitoes and anti-life animals like
snakes and wolves is difficult to answer.
To
face dangers fearlessly requires heroic attitude. But even heroes collapse if
the danger confronting them is overpowering.
All
said and done, we should be cautious at every step and in every situation. We
should always obey the laws of safety and never become daredevils.
God
protects those who really deserve protection.
Finally,
here is a most memorable quotation from an English poet Alexander Pope’s 1711 poem
“An Essay on Criticism” : Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.” What he
means to say is that“ inexperienced or reckless people will attempt things that
wiser, more cautious individuals would hesitate to do.”
