GOOD HEALTH

          GOOD HEALTH

Health is defined as the condition of a person’s body or mind. If he is in good health, he is not suffering from any disease, ailment or discomfort and is quite strong, robust, vigorous, active , lively and  alert.

To maintain good health, it is not enough to focus on balanced  diet like fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats, plenty of drinkable water, etc., but also on regular exercise including walking, running or swimming.

Besides diet and exercise, one must be physically, mentally and professionally active; must also be gentle, noble, morally strong, virtuous, patient, God-fearing, benevolent, grateful and helpful. He must avoid anger, negative thinking, revengeful attitude, pessimism, anti-social attitudes.

Rabelais, (French satirist (1490-1553) said: Without health life is not life; it is only a state of languor and suffering – an image of death.

English author Samuel Johnson ( 1709-84) says:  to preserve health is a moral and religious responsibility , for health is the basis of all social virtues. We can no longer be useful when not well.

English poet William Hall (1748-1825 ) warns: Take care of your health; you have no right to neglect it, and thus become a burden to yourself, and perhaps to others. Let your food be simple; never eat too much; take exercise enough; be systematic in all things; if unwell, starve yourself till you are well again, and may throw care to the winds, and physic to the dogs.

Sound sleep for six to eight hours is absolutely necessary to avoid tiredness, weakness, anxiety, depression and emotional imbalance.

Good health is also affected by pollution, want of pure water, social evils, natural calamities, corruption, poverty, unemployment, lack of civic facilities, etc.

To conclude, this piece of advice by the French writer and philosopher Voltaire (1694-1778) : Regimen is better than physic. Every one should be his own physician. We ought to assist. Eat with moderation what agrees with your constitution. Nothing is good for the body but what we can digest. What medicine can procure digestion? Exercise. What will recruit strength? Sleep. What will alleviate incurable evils? Patience.
