THE
SECRET OF HAPPINESS
In simple words, happiness lies in the fulfillment of basic
needs of life. They are not many. If you can have enough means to satisfy them
and continue to exist, you are essentially not unhappy.
The roots of unhappiness lie in ever-increasing desires. All
religions preach abstention from superfluous desires. Contentment is the soul
of happiness.
The Greek Stoic Philosopher (Died 135 AD) said: There is only
way to tranquility of mind and happiness; let this, therefore, be always ready
at hand with thee, both when thou wakest early in the morning, and all the day
long, and when thou goest late to sleep, to account no external things thine
own, but commit all these to God.
Simple living and high thinking are infallible sources of
happiness. Virtues, not vices, provide true enjoyment. All possessions
ultimately cause pain. Attachment to them is an unbearable burden. To
dispossess, is to relieve yourself from all anxieties.
According to Seneca , the Roman philosopher (4 BC-65AD) : The
true felicity of life is to be free from anxieties and perturbations to
understand and do our duties to God and man, and to enjoy the present without
any serious dependence on the future.
Today, the 20th March 2025, is ‘The International
Day of Happiness’ and its theme is “caring and sharing”. It also lays emphasis
on the importance of benevolence, empathy and trust as vital drives of both
individual and national happiness.
Finally, this short quote: Happiness is a positive emotional
state.
