UNITY AND HARMONY

 

          UNITY AND HARMONY

The word ‘unity’ signifies : oneness, cohesion,  fusion, togetherness, and consolidation. It is the result of cooperativeness despite individual differences.

A family consists of several members having different views, attitudes, likes and dislikes, yet they are one whole unit.  

A state consists of various communities, social groups, political parties and various castes and creeds, yet it is one united state.

Harmony indicates the qualities of agreement, unanimity, co-operation, fellowship, rapport, empathy and sympathy.

Peace, progress and prosperity lie both in unity and harmony.

It is unfortunate that people with different beliefs forget that there is one supreme God, one sun, one moon, one sky, and one earth.

We are influenced  by the same seasons, the same natural resources  and the  flora and fauna.

Progress and development in any area of the world and health and happiness in any family depend upon unity and harmony.

Wasteful rivalry, competition, jealousy and animosity among various social, religious and political groups have an adverse effect individually as well as collectively. .

Let us not ignore the fact that despite all sorts of differences , all of us are citizens of the same world .

The Indian anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) said: All Men Are Brothers. And according to the English Poet, translator and travel writer James Kirkup (1918-2009) “No Men Are Foreign”:  This is the famous title of his poem. Given below is a relevant extract:

REMEMBER  , No men are strange, no countries foreign,

Beneath all uniforms, a single body breathes

Like ours; the land our brothers walk upon

Is earth like this, in which we all shall lie.

They, too, aware of sun and air and water,

Are fed by peaceful harvests, by war’s long inter starv’d.

Their hands are ours, and in their lines we read

A labour not different from our own.

 

            To conclude, a short quote: So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth.
