GREAT LINES FROM GREAT POEMS (PART TEN)

                   GREAT LINES FROM GREAT POEMS

                                      (PART  TEN)

  1. The glories of our blood and state

Are shadows, not substantial things;

There is no armour against Fate;

Death lays his icy hand on kings:

                Sceptre and Crown

             Must tumble down,

      And in the dust be equal made

      With the poor crooked scythe and spade.-----James Shirley

  1. Stern daughter of the voice of God ;

 O Duty! If that name thou love

Who art a light to guide, a rod

To check the erring, and reprove ;

Thou who art victory and law

When empty terrors overawe ;

From vain temptations dost set free ;

And calm’st the weary strife of frail humanity.

There are who ask not if thine eye

Be on them; who, in love and truth,

Where no misgiving is, rely

Upon the genial sense of youth ;

Glad hearts ! without reproach or blot ;

Who do thy work, and know it not;

May joy be theirs while life shall last !

And thou, if they should totter, teach

          them to stand fast ! --------------------William Wordsworth.

  1. There’s a good time coming, boys,

A good time coming;

War in all men’s eyes shall be

A monster of iniquity,

In the good time coming.

Nations shall not quarrel then,

To prove which is the stronger,

Nor slaughter men for glory’s sake---

Wait a little longer.--------------------------Charles Mackay
